Former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) will be stepping up in weight to the light welterweight division to fight unbeaten contender Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KO’s) in a WBO light welterweight title eliminator at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California.

By Allan Fox: HBO analyst Max Kellerman foresees the October 13th match-up on HBO television between #3 IBF light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KO’s) and #4 WBO Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) ending up as a fight of the year for 2013 at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Kellerman could be right if Alvarado fights the way he normally does, and Rios is able to fight like he did back in 2010, before he started having problems making weight for his lightweight bouts.

Kellerman told Thatboxingvoice.com “I just think that’s the fight of the year. I’d be shocked if it wasn’t. Maybe the fight of the last couple of years.”

Alvarado, 32, is definitely beatable, however. In his fights against Breidis Prescott and Mauricio Herrera, Alvarado took a lot of punishment and had to tough basically tough those two fights out through superior size and strength. Alvarado would have lost to Prescott had he not rallied in the 10th to get a knockout win. Prescott did well against Alvarado in the first six rounds of the fight and looked to have the fight in the bag going into the 10th. Had Prescott fought smart he would have boxed and stayed on his feet to get the victory.

In Alvarado’s fight with Herrera, Alvarado went toe-to-toe with the weaker Herrera and eventually wore him down to earn a 10 round unanimous decision last April. However, the fight was a very tough one for both fighters and I wouldn’t be surprised if Alvarado lost something from that fight, because he took a massive amount of head shots in earning the decision. In Alvarado’s last two fights, he’s taken a career’s worth of punishment in winning them. He’s not going to last too much longer if he keeps getting hammered like that.

Rios, 26, hasn’t looked good since blowing out Urbano Antillon in July of 2011. In both of Rios’ fights since then, he’s looked poor against John Murray and Richard Abril. In both fights, Rios struggled to make the 135 pound limit, and you can really call his win over Abril a loss because there’s no way that Rios deserved to win that fight. It’s nice that he got the win but that’s not the way you want to win fights by getting decisions that almost no one agrees with outside of the two judges that gave Rios the win.

Alvarado can win this fight if Rios fights like he did in his last two bouts. If that Rios showed up then Alvarado will blast him apart. But if the Rios that beat Antillon shows up, then Rios will outbox Alvarado and possibly stop him.
